Congrats on the mixtape, guys.

1) Cool intro.
2) Some interesting ideas, but the drums are super weak and the overall sound is harsh and fatiguing. Not a fan of the way the "Ayla Lead" or whichever Vanguard preset is mixed in toward the end.
3) Well done! Most professional-sounding track on the mixtape.
4) Definitely sounds like "Maneater" drums layered with some other stuff. I like the track when the synth comes in at 00:45. Lots of Vanguard/Danja sounds, haha.
5) Reminds me of some 80's Depeche Mode sounds or something. Made me smile, hehe.
6) Sounds inspired by "The Way I Are". Super fatiguing mix. Can't finish this one.
7) Opening definitely catches the ear, but not a fan when the synths come in. Nothing gels in this track. Everything feels out of place. Can't finish this either.

Venture said...

Thanks for the review Alex. We appreciate that. :)

But...

I have to super disagree with you on the second track. Your taste is your opinion, and I'm way to confident in my work to debate or challenge your tastes and I understand art and its subjectiveness. But as far as "overall sound is harsh and fatiguing" I completely disagree.

I'm not only a producer, but I am also an up coming engineer. The mix stays consistent throughout the whole mix. Even toward the end where the screaming crowds, fireworks, and synths are all mixed in together. Most "fatiguing" mixes are mixes that are hot, or clipping, or overly compressed. I assure you this mix is at a -0.4 db meter standard that I keep for all my mixes.

They ayla lead from vanguard was not used in this record. Every square synth with a nice release, and a hall reverb is not that lead.

The kicks aren't for Hip Hop, it was for Techno. Techno/Dance are usually accompanied by nice kicks with a nice low response, but enough for the bass/bass synth to shine. The bass and the kicks should accompany and share a nice share of lows without challenging each other. A common misconception with a lot of producers, and some untrained engineers, they assume every kick must be booming. But even a booming kick can be sonically weak, and every genre calls on its own mix. Just like a hip hop head can hear a rock record and be like "these kicks are weak, and the whole set is far back in the mix".

I would like to ask what monitors you were using while listening to this mixtape.

track 4 the most catchy with the maneater drums.

The intro should made into a full blown beat. Last 30 secs are cool.

Venture said...

It will definitely be made into a track, that will lead off from it.

Alex said...

Venture, you seem to be under the assumption that I don't know what I'm talking about and you do. You don't know me, so please don't do that. Your reply also leads me to believe you don't take criticism well and feel you don't have much room for improvement, which would be unfortunate for anyone in the engineering or production fields. That's great that you're an engineer. So am I. Your mix is consistent. And the point wasn't where that melodic lead came from (though it sounds EXACTLY like the Vanguard preset I have in mind...the one that arpeggiates in "Maneater"); the point is that I find it weak in its context. Fatiguing does not necessarily mean clipped/compressed/limited/etc. It has a LOT to do with tonal balance. Your sounds are often fizzy and harsh in the high end. It's a very "scooped mids" sound. I'm not a "hip hop head" or an "untrained engineer", and I am very well aware of the stylistic differences from style to style in regards to drums. As I stated before, I'm not a fan of the drums in this track, and not because they aren't traditional hip hop drums. I listened on JBL LSR 6328P monitors.

Best of luck with your future projects!

Venture said...

You are assuming that I am assuming. You take things very personally, very quickly.

If I thought you were untrained, I would of said "you are untrained" flat out. I don't have sugar coat it. *see toward end*

One major flaw I see is that you say that it is "fizzy" and "harsh" in the highs.

When you are listening to Techno/Dance one thing that is mostly expected is buzzing synths, fizzy synths, and sometimes "harsh" sounds. Its a sound that is known in this genre field. Honestly, I couldn't listen to a lot of Techno/Dance amongst other genres because of that raw, saw-buzzing, frizzing sounds.

"scooped mids" have absolutely nothing to do with a fizzy sound or harshness of the highs. Shelving the mid freqs make sounds flatter, make them sit in the mix more, but it doesn't make the highs fizzy or harsh.

I take criticism very well, its just that I'm extremely confident in my work. I make music for myself, that is why no one can tell me anything, except engineering since there is a technical side to it. That is why most of the artist/musicians on top succeed, they do it for themselves, very confident, and some will look in and say "huge ego", like you have said to me previously in angry tones. Just by that, your criticism seems very negatively charged from the get go. Thats the way things work.

The melody or sound of the later lead, is your taste. I have no qualms with your opinion, and I have no room for changing the lead, I love it.

From your latest post, *you sound very uneducated/untrained in the mixing field. I mean this by no offense, but for such high priced near field monitors, it almost seems like a waste when your ear can identify and tag whats coming out of it correctly. I don't have to know you, all I need to know is what you are speaking... and it isn't sounding "smart" in this field. I don't mean no offense, I'm just inputting what you are saying, and outputting.

Think about someone listening to Death Metal and saying "theres just too much screaming... these guitars are loud... arrrggghhh"... onlookers will look at you like "wtf?". Or listening to Industrial music and saying "woah these sounds are very frizzy and harsh"... and people would look at you like "wtf"?

Hell, some Techno gives me headaches.

I do appreciate the wishing of luck. :)

This is really tiring. My engineer side just wanted to defend its mixes, which it prides itself in.

Alex, you can respond to this, or not... but I'm tired bro, this is really tiring.

Call me Starrk... I'm ready to go to sleep now...

lol back and forths are stupid...

but the mix sounds great to me, dont know what alex is talking about though...

Alex said...

When you remove frequencies in one area, it affects your perception of other areas. If mids are scooped out, you're left with accentuated lows and highs in relation to what you started with. Surely you're aware of this and can understand what I was saying. I barely went into any detail about mixing in my last post, so your saying I seem uneducated and my monitors are going to waste based on that is ridiculous. I was trying to be nice in my initial reply to you, then you became obviously insulting, though in a weak passive aggressive way, after your initial condescending tone. Bottom line, I'm not a fan of some of the choices you made in your track, though I think the music is nice. I'm talking about sound choices. You're assuming that since I think you're an overly-defensive, egotistical jackass I won't review your track with an open mind, which is not true. A man and his music are separate things. You can disagree with my opinion all you'd like. That's fine. But don't assume that someone's dislike of a few of your choices means they don't know what they're talking about or their opinion has no merit or they're simply attacking you. This is what makes you seem like such a douchebag. Get over yourself. Learn some humility. If you argue with everyone who criticizes you and tell them they're wrong about everything, coming off like you think you're better than them, no one is every going to want to bother giving you an honest opinion about anything, and your growth will be stunted because of your closed mind. If all you want is a bunch of ego-feeding dick-riders, keep at it. I'd bet the other producers on this mixtape could take some criticism to heart, not argue vehemently against it to protect their pride, and converse about it in a non-condescending way. Look at Black Arrow. He disagreed with a comment, but replied in a friendly, quick manner, while you typed multiple defensive paragraphs touting your merit as a producer and engineer and spouting off a bunch of info like no one is already aware of any of it. THAT is the difference that makes you so dislikable to some people here. I don't know how old you are, but I hope you grow out of the egotistical know-it-all attitude, because it will only hold you back.

Black Arrow said...

*sigh* I'm not reading all these walls of text. lol

I just say: Everyone has different ears and a different taste of music. Some prefer one style of music & mixing and other prefer a different style of music & mixing.
Makes no sense to argue about something when there will clearly be no agreement between both parties IMO.

@Alex: hahaha, yeah. Vanguard is my shit!! :P

Venture said...

Boy... BA loves him some Vanguard! lol

I really can't use that plugin, I used it like hell back in the day. I need some sound patches for it. But reFx has that commodore 64 sounding plugin that is neat, but when I had it awhile ago when I was using FL Studio, it seemed limited, it didn't have an true base waveform creation. I wanted to create my own sound. If I were to find some presets for that, that would be awesome.

Do me a favor call me jerk one more time *does the reject and jerk*...

You know... I wanted to make a dance called "douche"... still working on it.

evan said...

alex, you sound like a douche, especially the attacks you sent to venture earlier, so your argument automatically seems revengeful whatever you say

the mix sounds great to me

goodnight

Venture said...

Lets move on!

Alex said...

Yeah, I got Vanguard a while back, never got the extra patches, and used it a bit..but it was kinda hit and miss for what I was doing. I found myself deleting it from tracks more than keeping it.

Evan, I understand that.

epic said...

Yeah Vanguard aint too hot even with the patches imo, I copped a bunch, and they were all pretty weak

I suppose if you put time into it, you could create your own patches and make em dope, but I'd rather use something else to make those sounds

I read both Ventures and Alex's arguments. Venture, although I only the basics of engineering, I do have a sense of sound choice and I know what sounds good and why something can be enjoyable whilst I do not enjoy it. You're track on the mixtape, don't get me wrong, it's a good track, BUT. I'll have to agree with Alex on the drums, to an extent. the mix is good, but has a sense of oddity due to the clarity from the hats and snare, IMO. I think the sound choice could have been better, but what is your work is yours, not mine. Just throwing it out there. The reason being I agree with Alex is because I'm sure that when he heard the track as I have, we both had asked ourselves, why does it sound like that. Kind of like that feeling when you hear a melody start off and you can progress with it and know the following notes but then and there it instantly changes to a note you wouldn't expect and wonder why it was orchestrated in that way. Sometimes it can be good, sometimes bad. I understand you say you make the music for yourself but you must think, in reality, music is not only to be enjoyed and admired by yourself, the peers play a big part. If you ask me, the drums were very much on the lighter side and lack the punch and rhythm of a dance/techno mix. I did enjoy the synth choices, although some sounded a little cheap, they went very smoothly. your highs were a little crispy to me, ME. On the other hand, Alex did go over the top when he began to use profanity, although you both had explained to each other the elements of mixing; mixing in general, does not have a procedure, it can be done however way the engineer wants it. Same goes with music, that is how we distinguish another music producer to another, such as if we would define that Timbaland has his own sound and that with The Neptunes, it's because they follow their own procedures, I'm sure as hell Timbaland and Pharell could go at it about mixing and sound choice for days on end.

Other than that. Venture, your intro to the mixtape was very well pieced, and delivered just the right effect any intro should, especially towards the theme of the mixtape.
