It matters... to an extent. Helps you identify the producer, like an audible watermark, but for other purposes, it might not be so useful. If you study an artist long enough, trends between different works become really insignificant, because you come to expect them to sample from their own body of work. A prominent example of this is Bubba Sparxxx's "Ugly", which had "Get Ur Freak On" blatantly spliced right in there.
"A whole lot", from my perspective, is an exaggeration. You can only do so much with the fact that Danja, at one time, used the clicky sounds profusely and the observation that many of his released songs from 2007 sound like they belong in a Halloween funhouse.
Man, I love this. The change-ups are sooo sick. Pharrell is just a creative dude, period. Mix-wise, I hope it is unfinished, because I could see improvements being made, but whatever...it's cool either way.
I just realized that we talk a whole lot about Tim and Danja's sound engineers, but after all these years I still don't know whether the Neptunes have one, and if so, who.
